Our connection with the cycle of life is insufficient, and we are dependant on exhaustible resources. Since systems using renewable energies are already known, we can imagine colourful possibilities for the future. Even the little steps towards self-sufficiency that we have made give us a sense of meaning and have connected us with hundreds of projects around the world.
3 years ago we started to build an off-grid greenhouse based on Michael Reynold’s architecture of Earthships. Thanks to this initiative, we have formed a dynamic team with which we used to establish Vila Flora. However, municipality is asking us to dismantle the walls and remove the tires from the plot. We are lobbying to change their position and properly inform them of this project. If we can continue with the contruction of this Earthship, we will be able to study its thermal benefits, systems of water reuse and year-long planting in our climate.
At least 12 times a year spring comes to Vila Flora - the microgreens liven up the kitchen with their fresh, green sprouts. MikroFarma is a project aimed at growing and sharing microgreens, the small shoots of vegetables picked right after the first leaves develop. MicroFarma is driven by Michaela and Jakub’s love for the crunchiness of sunflower shoots, the sweetness of barley juice, and their desire to make local produce accessible to Vila Flora and neighboring restaurants.
21 fish lived in an aquaponic system during the first year of Vila Flora. Thanks to their metabolization of food scraps our vegetables and herbs were growing, and in turn purifying the water. However, we were forced to pause the project as we were unable to attain certain elements that were key to its success. In Winter 2017, we plan to upgrade the aquaponic system and harvest fresh food in the kitchen once again.
Our philosophy on education is that sharing information, experiences and a studious atmosphere enhances healthy and self-sufficient life styles. We are also interested in active nonviolence and seek to put its concepts and ideas into practice. In our lives, we focus on looking inwards for answers.
Ahimsa Academy is a follow-up on the message of Mahatma Gandhi and Silo, who dedicated their lives to active nonviolence. Our intention is to adjust their proposals to present situations. The idea is to act in unity with the best within ourselves in order to foster a more humane world. But how does one live their daily life on the practical to enhance this evolution? Everyone needs to find their own answer, and we would like Ahimsa Academy to be a hub of these answers. Our purpose is to help spread knowledge about methods of overcoming violence and suffering, and to enhance long term development instead of preventive steps.
Every Wednesday, Vila Flora invites friends, acquaintances and guests to gather for an evening of communal meditation and reflection. Our intention is to push all of our daily activities aside and concentrate our energy inwards. We base the content of our meeting on a little book known as Silo’s Message or Inner Look, written by philosopher, writer and spiritualist Silo. However, the group is open to leading meditation and discussion inspired by other books or ideologies. Our goal is to be in unity with the best within ourselves and to think, act and speak in accordance with that.
